CRAB MEAT HORS D'OEUVRES

1/2 cup butter or margarine
1 very small onion
4 tbsp flour
1 tsp salt
2 dashes pepper
2 cups milk
2 cups crab meat
1 cup cheddar cheese
Buttered bread crumbs

Heat butter in top of a double boiler. Add onion and cook until tender. Stir in gradually flour, salt, pepper and milk. Cook over hot water until thick, stirring often. Add crab meat to sauce, after it thickens, and stir mixture. Spoon mixture into crab shells or small oven-proof dishes. Top each serving with cheddar cheese and a sprinkling of buttered bread crumbs. Bake at 450 degrees for 10 to 15 minutes, or until cheese is melted and bread crumbs are brown.
