Brooklawn Earns Another World Srs Berth

So this is what happens when Brooklawn’s Senior American Legion team got its back against the wall. After losing its first Mid-Atlantic Regional game, 8-3 to Cecil, Maryland, the defending World Series champions had no margin for error.

Brooklawn had to win three games in two days in order to make a return trip to the World Series in Shelby, North Carolina.

Not only did Brooklawn win those three games, but outscored the three teams, 32-0. Thus the franchise that was founded by the late Joe Barth Sr. in 1952, will attempt to win its fourth national championship.

“We have been in a lot of big games, so when we got down, the players didn’t panic,” said coach Dennis Barth, son of the Brooklawn founder and also the head baseball coach at Rutgers-Camden.

Brooklawn, which earlier won a fifth consecutive state championship, was the host of the Mid-Atlantic Regional. The games were played at Campbell’s Field, home of the Camden Riversharks.

Brooklawn opened the regional with a 6-2 win over Endicott, New York. Tyler Mondile, who was the MVP of the state tournament after going 2-0, was the winning pitcher in the regional opener. Mondile, who will be a junior at Gloucester Catholic, allowed just two runs (one earned) in eight innings.

Rightfielder Frank Kinsey, who will be a senior at Gloucester Catholic, went 2 for 4 with two RBIs.

Recent Audubon graduate Eric Schorr earned the win in Brooklawn’s second game, a 9-3 decision over Northhampton, PA. Schorr allowed two runs (one earned) in seven innings.

Catcher Todd Tre, who will be a senior at Gloucester Catholic, went 3 for 4 with three RBIs.

Next came an 8-3 loss to Cecil, Maryland. First baseman Anthony Harrold, who will be a senior at Gloucester Catholic, went 2 for 4 with a run scored.

That meant Brooklawn had to win its next three games and that is where all the shutouts were posted.

First up was a 16-0 win over Swoyersville, PA. Schorr was 2 for 4 with four RBIs, and second baseman Sean Breen, who will be a senior at Gloucester Catholic, went 4 for 5 with two runs scored and three RBI.

Gloucester Catholic senior-to-be Matt Parr earned the win, striking out six and walking two.

That victory meant Brooklawn had to win two games on Monday.

The first was a 6-0 win over Northhampton. Pete Farlow, who will be a senior at Gloucester Catholic, pitched seven shutout innings, and recent Audubon graduate Kevin Terifay allowed one hit in the two innings.

Farlow was also 4 for 4 with two RBIs. That brought up the rematch with Cecil, Maryland, for the championship. Brooklawn won 10-0 in a game shortened to seven innings due to the 10-run rule.

Harrold was 2 for 4 with four RBIs. John Malatesta, a recent Vineland graduate, allowed five hits during his seven-inning stint.

Malatesta, who batted .500 in the tournament, was named the MVP of the regionals.

Brooklawn, which won the title last year in Shelby, North Carolina, returned there for this year’s World Series.

The team departed on Tuesday and will play its first game on Thursday, Aug. 14.

It’s an unbelievable accomplishment just to reach the World Series. Brooklawn showed last year it knows what to do when getting there, and no doubt hopes to show that know-how in this year’s World Series.
