Tornado Clean-Up Begins Some Burlington County residents are cleaning up after an F-1 tornado touched down in the eastern part of the county.

The twister, packing winds of about 110 miles per hour, damaged buildings and knocked down trees and power lines last night.

The tornado caused significant damage to an administration building and thrift store at the state-run New Lisbon Developmental Center on Route 72 in Woodland Township.

Two staff members were in vehicles when the storm hit and suffered minor injuries. None of the roughly 500 developmentally disabled residents were hurt.

The tornado ranked near the bottom of an intensity scale.

The latest blast of rough weather came two weeks after torrential rains caused extensive flooding and property damage to central parts of Burlington County.

Flooding Hits Suburbs

Severe storms slammed the area Tuesday night, causing flood watches to be issued into Wednesday morning.

The Kelly Drive in Philadelphia was flooded on Wednesday after the Schuylkill River rose. The river also spilled over onto several smaller roads.

In Berks County, the Hay Creek swelled in Birdsboro. A driver there thought he could get through the high waters in his pickup truck, but instead he had to be rescued.

In Montgomery County, lightning lit up the sky as the storm rumbled through Lower Merion. Heavy downpours slowed traffic along City Avenue.

In Glassboro, N.J., rushing waters overflowed the dam, forcing crews to shut down part of Route 47.
