Part II: South Jersey Games of the Week (Saturday)

Here are some of the top high school football games this weekend:

Woodbury (3-0) at Paulsboro (4-1), 2 pm.
Paulsboro has been without standout sophomore running back-defensive back Bhayshul Tuten, who has been sidelined by injury. He had an interception return for a TD in Paulsboro’s biggest win, 19-14 against West Deptford in the opener for both teams. Paulsboro’s lone loss has come against current SJ Group 1 favorite Penns Grove, 19-6. The Red Raiders defense, led by tackling machine Santino Morina, is good enough to keep them in any game. Paulsboro enters the game with a two-game winning streak, having outscored Lindenwold and Sterling, 91-23 in those games. Woodbury is coming off a 28-9 win over Pennsville. The winner of this game will be the favorite in the WJFL Memorial Division, although Gateway could also have a say in that matter. Woodbury junior QB Andre Parker is the key to this game, with dual-threat ability. Last year these teams met opening week and Paulsboro won, 32-0, but this one figures to be much more competitive.

Glassboro (3-0) at Salem (3-1), 12 pm.
Since an opening loss to a strong Conwell-Egan (PA) team, Salem has won three in a row by a combined 164-20 score. Senior quarterback Jamael Bundy leads the explosive offense. Glassboro is among the most improved teams in South Jersey. The Bulldogs have already surpassed their record of last year when they were 2-8. After a bye week, Glassboro faces its most difficult stretch of the season with games against Salem, Gateway and Penns Grove, team with a combined 11-1 record.

Shawnee (2-2) at Woodrow Wilson (5-0), 2 pm.
Can anybody stop the Wilson passing game. Senior Nick Kargman has passed for 2,029 yards and 26 TD passes after throwing six TD passes in last week’s 49-34 win over Seneca. Shawnee first-year QB Joe Dalsey is more of a dual threat, with an emphasis on running. A former running back who is playing quarterback for the first time, Dalsey had four rushing TDs and one passing in last week’s 42-21 win over Moorestown. Dalsey scored on runs of 11, 15, 4 and 43 yards. This is the beginning of a tough stretch for Shawnee, which also faces Union City, Williamstown and Rancocas Valley the next three weeks. Counting Wilson, Shawnee’s next four opponents have a combined 17-2 record.

Cumberland (0-5) at Cherry Hill East (0-4), 2 pm.
Something has to give. This is the second straight week that Cherry Hill East has met a winless team. Last week the Cougars fell, 21-14 to Princeton. East has lost 32 consecutive games. Cumberland’s losing streak is just the five games this season since the Colts won their final two games of last year. The Colts are coming off a 34-28 OT loss to neighboring rival Bridgeton. Tyrell Russell had TD receptions of 59 and 62 yards for Cumberland and East will have to watch him since he is a serious deep threat.
