Part I: South Jersey Games of the Week

Here are more top games in as the South Jersey football season continues this week:

Shawnee (1-1) at St. Augustine (1-2), Friday 6 pm.
Both teams are coming off losses and each needs to win to keep pace with Williamstown in the WJFL American Division. Shawnee, after an impressive opening 21-14 win over Cherokee, was upset last week by Hammonton. That’s a Hammonton team that was 0-2 and had lost to Shawnee, 41-6 in last week’s South Jersey Group 4 championship. St. Augustine is coming off a 30-8 loss to consensus South Jersey No. 1 team St. Joseph. The Hermits defense is led by Joe Bonczek, who had made 33 tackles in three games.

Williamstown (3-0) at Lenape (1-2), Friday, 7 pm.

Lenape has one of the toughest schedules in South Jersey. After losing to defending Central Jersey Group 5 champion South Brunswick and South Jersey Top 10 team St. Augustine, Lenape broke through with last week’s 17-14 win over Vineland. Xavier Coleman scored two TDs and Steve Mulville added a 42-yard field goal that was the eventual difference. Williamstown has allowed just one TD in each of its first three wins, including last week’s 35-6 victory over Millville. Braves QB J.C. Collins has completed 60 percent of his passes for 399 yards and 2 TDs. He has also rushed for 177 yards (4.2 avg.) and 3 TDs and has made seven tackles a DB. Collins is headed to the University Massachusetts.

Hammonton (1-2) at Holy Spirit (2-1), Friday, 7 pm.
After losing to Maryland power Mount St. Joseph, 35-16, Spirit has beaten Eastern, 30-22 and Camden Catholic, 38-0. Hammonton is coming off one of the biggest wins of the week with a 21-17 victory over defending South Jersey Group 4 champion Shawnee. If the Blue Devils earned a second straight win over a consensus South Jersey Top 10 team, then they could put themselves in the picture for a South Jersey Group 4 playoff berth.

Washington Township (1-1) at Eastern (1-1), Friday, 7 pm.
These are teams that were once South Jersey powers looking to regain their footing. After an opening 30-22 loss to Holy Spirit, Eastern defeated Cherry Hill East, 52-6. Senior quarterback Andrew Heck has thrown for 414 yards and two touchdowns. Senior TJ Franden has rushed for 171 yards (7.4 avg.) and two touchdowns. After an opening 16-7 loss to Kingsway, Washington Township rebounded for a 21-0 victory over Atlantic City, the first victory for coach and former Minuteman standout Mike Schatzman.

Burlington Township (2-0) at Moorestown (0-2), Friday, 7 pm.
Burlington Township hasn’t been challenged in wins over Paul VI and Triton. Senior quarterback Dan Grozozski has thrown for 352 yards and 6 TDs. Senior Tyrese Ware has four receptions for 133 yards and three scores.  Despite its record, Moorestown should provide a major challenge to the Falcons. The Quakers have lost both games, to Winslow Township and Nottingham by a total of eight points. Last week’s loss to Nottingham came in overtime. With a quality QB like Brian McMonagle, Moorestown should be competitive with anybody on its schedule.

Camden (2-1) at Delsea (1-1), Friday, 7 pm.
Delsea, which opened with a win over Willingboro, was beaten last week by West Deptford 27-12. Senior running back Aidan Borguet, a 2,000-yard rusher last year, has rushed for 165 in the first two games. Getting the running game in gear will be a key for the Crusaders. Camden has won two in a row since an opening 20-6 loss to defending three-time state champion Wise of Maryland. Sophomore receiver Chris Palmer has caught seven passes for 130 yards and two TDs. Senior quarterback Monte Williams has thrown for 355 yards and two scores.
