Cape Swimmers Dominate at Meet of Champions Individual from the Cape Atlantic League enjoyed a big day at the NJSIAA Swimming Meet of Champions where were staged at the Gloucester County Institute of Technology.
In the girls’ events, Ocean City had multiple champions.
Ocean City’s Amanda Nunan won the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 1:49.30. She also won the 500 freestyle in 4:48.12, edging teammate Maggie Wallace (4:48.21).
In fact the 500 was an event that South Jersey dominated by taking the top five spots. Rounding out the group were Emily Jones of Gloucester Catholic (5:01.51), Tess Ruona of Shawnee (5:02.11) and Cinnaminson’s Lilly Black (5;02.22).
Ryann Styer of Ocean City won the 50 free style (23.16).
South Jersey’s other individual winner was Grace Yoon of Cherry Hill East, who captured the 100 breaststroke in a time of 1:03.46.
There were only eight individual races and South Jersey athletes captured four of them.
In the boys’ championships, Mainland freshman Destin Lasco stole the show. He not only won two events but also set meet records in the process.
Lasco won the 200 individual medley in a time of 1:48.07. He also captured the 100 backstroke in a time of 47.67.
In the 50 freestyle, Mainland’s Justin Liu was the winner in a time of 20.71 seconds.
This was a race in which South Jersey swimmers excelled by claiming the top four spots. The others were second place Luke Snyder of St. Augustine (21.11), Cherry Hill East’s Kevin Gillooly (21.14) and Rancocas Valley’s Kyle Worrell (21.19).
Liu also won the 100 freestyle in a time of 45.59. Once again he edged St. Augustine’s Snyder, who enjoyed an outstanding meet with his two second place finishes and one first place finish the 200 freestyle relay.
In addition, Mainland won two of the three relays while St. Augustine captured the other. No wonder both teams were state champions – Mainland in Public B and St. Augustine in Non-Public A championship.
(Mainland beat Scotch Plains, 103-67 in the championship while St. Augustine upset seven-time defending champion CBA, 89-81 in the Non-Public A championship).
Mainland captured the 200 medley relay in a time of 1:34.28. The quartet consisted of Destin Lasco, Erik Truong, Joey Rogers and Justin Liu.
The Mustangs also won the 400 freestyle relay in a meet-record time of 3:02.31. The old meet record was set last year by Mainland (3:05.33). The relay members were Justin Liu, Glenn Lasco, Joey Rogers and Destin Lasco.
St. Augustine captured the 200 freestyle relay in a time of 1:25.23. The foursome consisted of Matt Mahon, Dominick Sheppard, Mark Taccard and Luke Snyder).
Of all the girls’ and boys’ individual and relay champions, all came from the Cape Atlantic with the exception of Cherry Hill East.
It speaks volumes of the swimming programs in the Cape and of South Jersey as well.
